Durga Puja, one of the most significant festivals for Hindus, is facing unexpected challenges in Bangladesh this year. Reports indicate that the Hindu community in the country is under immense pressure due to new restrictions and financial demands from both fundamentalist groups and certain authorities. As tensions rise, the once-celebrated festival is now being overshadowed by fear and uncertainty.
Threats and Heavy Taxes Imposed
According to reports from Daily Star, Hindu communities in Bangladesh are being asked to pay heavy taxes for setting up Durga Puja pandals. In some areas, demands for as much as Rs 5 lakh have been made to allow the setting up of pandals and the installation of idols. This has created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the Puja committees and devotees.
Furthermore, letters have been sent to various Durga Puja committees, threatening them with dire consequences if they do not comply with the financial demands. Committees in areas like Dakop and Khulna have filed complaints with the local police regarding these threats. Despite the complaints, no strong action has been taken, leaving the Hindu community vulnerable.
Silence During Namaz and Restrictions on Celebrations
Adding to the tension, orders have been issued demanding complete silence in Durga Puja pandals during the time of Namaz. These orders were reportedly issued by the advisor of the Home Ministry, sparking further concerns among devotees. The demand for silence during the festival has left many feeling that their religious rights are being infringed upon.
Earlier reports from the Dhaka Tribune mentioned that the interim government, currently led by Mohammad Yunus, suggested that no music or festivities take place in temples during the Namaz period. This move has added to the growing list of restrictions, making it difficult for devotees to celebrate Durga Puja freely.
Fundamentalists Take Control After Hasina Government’s Exit
The political scenario in Bangladesh has also played a role in the growing unrest. Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, fundamentalist groups have taken more control over the country’s affairs. The law and order situation has deteriorated significantly, allowing radical groups to exert influence over religious festivals like Durga Puja.
The lack of strong measures from the police and local authorities has left the Hindu community feeling increasingly unsafe. Incidents of idol vandalism and looting of temples have been reported, further fueling fears among devotees. Despite these challenges, senior members of the current government have assured the community of protection, although such promises have yet to translate into real action on the ground.
Contradictory Statements from Government Officials
While many in the government are either silent or indirectly supporting these restrictive measures, some officials have taken a more balanced stance. Mohammad Tauheed Hussain, an advisor to the Foreign Ministry, recently commented that the orders being issued regarding Durga Puja are “completely wrong.” He expressed surprise at the restrictions and added that Durga Puja has been celebrated peacefully for decades in Bangladesh.
Tauheed further mentioned that the government would do its best to ensure the festival is celebrated without any major disturbances. However, this assurance has done little to calm the nerves of the Hindu community, as fundamentalist groups continue to influence decisions in many regions.
Rising Concerns for the Future
As Durga Puja approaches, there is growing anxiety among the Hindu population in Bangladesh. The increasing restrictions, combined with financial demands and threats, have dampened the festive spirit. For many, Durga Puja is not only a religious celebration but a way to preserve their cultural identity. The current situation, however, is making it difficult for them to do so.
Whether the government will take concrete steps to protect the rights of the Hindu minority remains to be seen. For now, the community is left to navigate the challenges ahead, hoping for a safer and more inclusive future.
