Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has promised a significant increase in the financial aid provided under the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme if his government secures victory in the upcoming state elections. Currently, women beneficiaries receive Rs. 1,500 every month. Shinde has committed to raising this amount to Rs. 3,000 per month to further support married, widowed, and destitute women across the state.
The ‘Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana’ was launched by the Mahayuti alliance government to provide financial assistance to women between the ages of 21 and 65 years. This aid is intended for women whose families have an annual income of up to Rs. 2.5 lakh. The scheme, introduced as part of a broader welfare initiative, has been lauded by the ruling government as a critical support system for economically vulnerable women.
Further Boosts to Financial Assistance Promised
Addressing a gathering in Kolhapur, CM Shinde emphasized his government’s commitment to expanding this support if re-elected. Shinde announced, “We aim to increase the financial assistance to Rs. 2,500 and then to Rs. 3,000 per month.” He expressed confidence that the Shiv Sena, in alliance with BJP and NCP, would retain power in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly Elections. He called on the women of Maharashtra to support his government for more impactful welfare measures.
Shinde also criticized the opposition for their stance on the ‘Ladki Bahin Yojana’, questioning their reluctance to back the program. He assured the public that the government would continue to focus on women’s welfare and economic support measures to improve their lives.
Political Reactions and Opposition’s Concerns
The opposition parties, however, have raised concerns about the government’s promises. Devendra Fadnavis, former CM and senior leader, warned voters at an election rally that the opposition could try to scrap the scheme. He stressed that voters should be cautious in the upcoming elections, as programs like ‘Ladki Bahin’ could face discontinuation if the current government is not re-elected.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reassured the public that the scheme would continue for the next five years if the Mahayuti coalition remains in power. He stated that his government is committed to keeping this essential welfare program running and expanding it further.
Rising Popularity of the ‘Ladki Bahin’ Scheme
The ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme has gained immense popularity among women across Maharashtra. By providing monthly financial assistance, the program has helped alleviate the financial burdens of many families. As the 2024 elections approach, the scheme has become a key talking point, with many political parties recognizing its impact on the electorate.
