The e-Shram scheme, launched by the Government of India in August 2021, aims to improve the lives of unorganized sector workers. This initiative by the Ministry of Labor and Employment provides social security benefits to millions of workers who are not members of EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund Organization) or ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation). If you work in the unorganized sector, this scheme could be a significant step toward securing your future.

    Understanding the e-Shram Portal

The e-Shram portal is an online platform designed to register and organize unorganized workers. Once registered, a worker gets access to numerous government benefits and schemes without needing to apply separately for each. The portal aims to collect data on unorganized workers so that social security schemes can reach the right beneficiaries effectively.

    Eligibility Criteria for e-Shram

To register for the e-Shram scheme, you need to meet the following requirements:

    • Age Limit: Workers aged 18 to 59 years can register.
    • Sector: You must belong to the unorganized sector.
    • Unique Status: If you are already a member of EPFO or ESIC, you are not eligible for this scheme.

    Documents Required for e-Shram Registration

You need the following documents to register:

    1. Aadhaar Card: Your Aadhaar number is essential for registration.
    2. Mobile Number Linked to Aadhaar: Ensure your mobile number is updated and linked to your Aadhaar card.
    3. Bank Account Details: You will need to provide bank account information for receiving scheme benefits.

    Benefits of e-Shram Scheme

Once registered, workers enjoy numerous benefits under the e-Shram scheme, such as:

    1. Accidental Insurance Cover

Registered workers automatically receive an insurance cover of up to Rs.2 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). This includes Rs.1 lakh for partial disability and ₹2 lakh for full disability or accidental death.

    2. Free First-Year Insurance Premium

For the first year, the government pays the entire insurance premium. From the second year onward, workers need to pay a nominal annual fee of Rs.12.

    3. Access to Social Security Benefits

Workers registered on the e-Shram portal gain access to various government schemes such as health, insurance, and employment-related initiatives without any additional paperwork.

    4. Universal Account Number (UAN)

Each registered worker receives a unique 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN). This number is a lifetime identification and doesn’t require renewal. However, workers must update their details on the portal once a year.

    5. Improved Financial Inclusion

With a proper database of unorganized workers, the government can directly transfer monetary benefits to their accounts, ensuring transparency and timely delivery.

    Registration Process for e-Shram Scheme

Registering on the e-Shram portal is simple and free. Here’s how you can do it:

    1. Visit the e-Shram Portal: Open eshram.gov.in in your browser.
    2. Click on Register: On the homepage, click on the “Self Registration” button.
    3. Enter Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number: Fill in your mobile number and verify it using the OTP sent to your phone.
    4. Provide Necessary Details: Enter personal information such as name, address, work details, and educational qualifications.
    5. Submit Bank Details: Provide your bank account number for financial transactions.
    6. Generate UAN: Once your details are verified, you will receive a Universal Account Number. This will serve as your identification for future benefits.

You can also visit a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC) for help with registration.

    Keeping Your Information Updated

Workers can update their details on the e-Shram portal, including:

    • Change of mobile number.
    • Update in address or work profile.
    • Educational qualifications.

    Addressing Important Concerns

    • No Renewal Required: Once you register, the UAN is valid for life. Annual updates of details are recommended but not mandatory.
    • Joining Again: If a worker exits the scheme, they can rejoin during the annual renewal window between June 1 and June 30.
    • Support for Families of Deceased Workers: In case of a worker’s death, their family members can claim benefits by submitting the necessary documents on the portal or at the nearest CSC.

By providing a safety net for millions of unorganized workers, the e-Shram scheme is a game-changer in securing their social and financial well-being. With its simple registration process and numerous benefits, this initiative promises a better future for those contributing silently to the nation’s growth.
