When you think of rice, you probably imagine a simple, everyday food. But have you heard of Kinmemai rice from Japan? This is no ordinary rice. Priced at a whopping Rs 15,000 per kilogram, it holds the title of the most expensive rice in the world! So, what makes this rice so costly, and why is it gaining so much attention?

Produced with a Special Method, No Washing Required

Kinmemai rice is produced by Toyo Rice Corporation, a company founded in 1961 in Wakayama, Japan. The rice undergoes a unique production technique that improves its taste and nutritional value. Interestingly, it doesn’t need to be washed before cooking, a feature that helps save water and makes it very convenient for busy people.

Health Benefits that Set it Apart from Regular Rice

Apart from the high price tag, Kinmemai rice stands out because of its many health benefits. Unlike regular white rice, Kinmemai Better White provides much more fiber and essential nutrients. For instance, it contains 1.8 times more fiber and seven times more Vitamin B1 than typical white rice. Additionally, it has six times more lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which help boost your immune system and may protect you from flu, infections, and even diseases like cancer and dementia.

Nutty Flavor and Easy-to-Digest Brown Rice

For those who prefer brown rice, Kinmemai offers a special brown rice variant. This version retains the benefits of traditional brown rice but is lighter and easier to digest. With its nutty flavor and unique chestnut color, it’s a healthier option without sacrificing taste. The rice is gently polished, ensuring the beneficial bran layer remains intact. So, if you’re someone who values both health and taste, this could be the ideal choice.

    Why Is It So Expensive?

The hefty price of Rs 15,000 per kg might raise some eyebrows, but there are reasons behind it. Each box of Kinmemai rice typically contains six packets, with each packet weighing 140 grams. The total cost of a box is approximately $155 or Rs 13,000. Japan exports these boxed packages globally, and its exclusivity and quality make it an attractive option for consumers seeking premium products.

Toyo Rice Corporation: The Pioneer in Premium Rice

The company behind this rice, Toyo Rice Corporation, isn’t new to innovation. In the 1970s, it introduced Musenmai rice, which could be cooked without the need for washing. With continuous improvements in their rice-polishing technology, the company eventually created Kinmemai Better White. Over the past decade, this rice has become a favorite in Japan, and now, its global popularity is growing.
