In the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, Bhavesh Purohit has revolutionized organic farming with a unique venture called Dhenu Prasad. What started as a small initiative in 2017 is now a flourishing business that earns Rs 70 lakh annually. Bhavesh, with a degree in biotechnology, found his inspiration from an unexpected source—cow urine. His innovative solution aims to make farming both sustainable and profitable for local farmers.
From Biotechnology Graduate to Organic Pioneer
Bhavesh Purohit, a resident of Banaskantha, completed his graduation in Biotechnology. His father, who ran a cowshed, often struggled with saving abandoned cows, and this motivated Bhavesh to find a practical solution. During his college days, Bhavesh saw many cows being left on the streets, and he realized that the only way to make these animals useful again was to turn their waste into something valuable.
This is how the idea of producing organic fertilizer from cow urine was born. The foundation for Dhenu Prasad Agrovet Limited was laid with a clear goal: create a product that benefits farmers, improves soil health, and promotes natural, chemical-free farming.
A Struggle to Convince Farmers
Though Bhavesh had a solid idea, putting it into practice wasn’t easy. After three years of intense research, Dhenu Prasad launched its first product—a natural fertilizer made from cow urine. Despite the product’s benefits for soil health, Bhavesh faced many challenges at the start. He initially collected 50 liters of cow urine from his father’s cowshed and visited local villages to introduce farmers to organic farming. However, farmers were hesitant and rejected the idea, as they were unfamiliar with the concept of cow urine-based fertilizer.
To tackle this, Bhavesh organized workshops to educate farmers on the benefits of natural farming and how his product could enhance their crops without harmful chemicals.
Success Through Perseverance
Today, Dhenu Prasad processes about 45,000 liters of cow urine every month and supports over 500 farmers in adopting organic practices. The company offers two primary products: Dhanrakshak, a natural insecticide, and Dhanbhoomi, a soil conditioner. These products have become widely popular, helping farmers grow healthier crops while restoring soil vitality.
In the financial year 2023-24, Dhenu Prasad achieved a revenue of Rs 70 lakh. Now, the company aims to expand its operations and process 10,000 liters of cow urine daily, bringing more innovative products to the market and further promoting sustainable agriculture in India.
This young man’s vision is a testament to the power of persistence, transforming what seemed like a modest idea into a thriving business that supports both the environment and local farmers.
