The Uttar Pradesh government has started a fresh verification process for ration cards across the state. Officials are checking and removing the names of people who no longer qualify, such as those who have passed away or submitted incorrect details earlier. The government has decided to cancel these ineligible ration cards and issue new ones only to truly deserving citizens.
To make sure subsidised food reaches the right people, the Food and Civil Supplies Department is now working district by district. The goal is clear—to give food benefits to the poor and needy, especially as the government is currently providing three months of advance ration.
Not Everyone Can Get a New Ration Card in UP
Many people are wondering whether everyone in Uttar Pradesh will get a new ration card. The answer is no. The government has already fixed clear rules to identify who can apply. The eligibility criteria differ for people living in rural and urban areas. You must match these conditions to apply for a new ration card.
People in Villages Who Can Apply for a New Ration Card
The National Food Security Act (NFSA) defines the rules for rural areas. If you live in a village and meet any of these conditions, you can apply for a new ration card:
- Families of beggars, domestic workers, shoe or slipper repairers, and street vendors
- Orphans, garbage collectors, daily wage labourers, porters, handcart pullers, leprosy patients or people affected by AIDS
- Landless labourers
- Families below the poverty line
- Widows or elderly women without support
- Families without any male member above 18 years
- Homeless families or those living in temporary kutcha houses up to 30 sq. metres
- Transgender individuals living in poverty
These people must submit valid documents like an Aadhaar card, address proof, and income details when applying.
People in Cities Who Can Apply for a New Ration Card
Urban areas also have clear eligibility standards. Not everyone in cities can apply. Only those who meet these categories are allowed:
- Families who survive on begging, shoe repair, waste collection, street vending or cycle rickshaw pulling
- Orphans living in poor households
- Widows and women-led families without regular income
- Households with no proper roof or living in slum-like conditions
- Transgender individuals living without a stable income
- Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) families who fall under the poverty line
These families must show that they are truly in need, using documents like poverty certificates, income proof, and ration card cancellation slips (if reapplying).
Why This Verification is Important
The UP government wants to ensure that subsidised food grains like wheat, rice, and pulses are reaching the people who really need them. By removing fake or wrong entries and giving benefits only to deserving families, the administration aims to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and stop any misuse of the scheme.
People who fail to meet the eligibility criteria will not get the new ration card. So, it’s important to check your qualifications before applying. If you think you are eligible, collect your documents and visit your nearest ration office or apply through the official portal once the application window opens.
