The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. Every month, a portion of your salary is deposited into your EPF account by both you and your employer. Over time, this amount grows with interest and becomes a strong savings fund for your future.

But how do you know how much money is in your EPF account? Do you want to check your EPF balance, but don’t know how to do it?

Don’t worry! You don’t have to visit any government office or stand in long lines. Today, checking your PF balance is very simple and takes just a few minutes. You can check it on your mobile phone, through SMS, missed calls, mobile app, or the EPFO portal.

In this detailed guide, you’ll learn about all the ways you can check your EPF balance instantly, anytime and from anywhere.

What Is EPF and Why Is It Important?

Before learning how to check the EPF balance, let’s quickly understand what EPF is.

The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Both the employee and the employer contribute 12% of the employee’s basic salary and dearness allowance every month to the PF account.

The money deposited in the EPF account earns interest (currently around 8.15% per year). The collected amount is given to the employee at the time of retirement, resignation, or in some special situations like buying a house, illness, or education.

Why Should You Regularly Check Your EPF Balance?

It’s important to check your PF balance from time to time so that you can:

    • Track your savings and know how much money you’ve collected.
    • Plan your financial future, especially for retirement.
    • Identify any mistakes in deposit or missing contributions by your employer.
    • Keep your UAN account active and up to date.

Now let’s go through the best and easiest ways to check your EPF balance in minutes.

    EPF Balance Check Through SMS

One of the fastest ways to know your PF balance is by sending a simple SMS from your registered mobile number.

✔️ Steps to Check EPF Balance by SMS:

    1. Open your SMS app.
    2. Type this message:
      EPFOHO UAN ENG
(Replace “ENG” with your language code like HIN for Hindi, TAM for Tamil, etc.)
    3. Send the SMS to 7738299899.

Example: If your UAN is activated and you want to receive details in English, type EPFOHO 1002XXXXXXX ENG and send to 7738299899.

    Important Points:

    • Your UAN must be activated and linked with your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account.
    • The SMS facility supports multiple languages: Hindi, English, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada, etc.

Within a few seconds, you will receive an SMS with your EPF balance details including total contribution and interest earned.

Check EPF Balance by Missed Call

If you don’t want to send SMS, you can simply give a missed call to check your PF balance.

✔️ Steps to Check EPF Balance by Missed Call:

    1. From your registered mobile number, dial 9966044425.
    2. The call will automatically disconnect after a few rings.
    3. After a few seconds, you will get an SMS from EPFO with your latest balance details.

This service is totally free and works even without an internet connection.

    Requirements:

    • Your mobile number must be linked to your UAN account.
    • Your KYC details (Aadhaar, PAN, and bank) must be updated and verified.

This method is quick, offline, and works well even in rural areas without internet access.

Check EPF Balance Using the UMANG App

UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is a government app that gives access to various government services including EPFO services.

✔️ Steps to Check EPF Balance on UMANG App:

    1. Download the UMANG app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
    2. Open the app and select the EPFO service.
    3. Click on Employee Centric Services.
    4. Select View Passbook.
    5. Enter your UAN number and OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
    6. After login, you can view your PF balance, monthly contributions, interest, and full transaction history.

The UMANG app also allows you to raise claims, track claim status, and update KYC.

It’s a one-stop solution to all your EPF-related services on your phone.

Check EPF Balance on EPFO Portal

You can also check your EPF balance directly from the official EPFO website.

✔️ Steps to Check PF Balance Online:

    1. Visit https://www.epfindia.gov.in.
    2. Go to the “Services” section.
    3. Click on “For Employees”.
    4. Under “Services”, click on “Member Passbook”.
    5. Log in using your UAN and password.
    6. Once logged in, you will see your EPF account and balance details.

    You can see:

    • Monthly contributions by employee and employer.
    • Interest added to your account.
    • Withdrawals (if any).

This method requires internet access and login credentials, but it gives you full details in one place.

    Check EPF Balance Through DigiLocker

The DigiLocker app, developed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, also provides access to EPFO documents and services.

✔️ Steps to Use DigiLocker for EPF:

    1. Download the DigiLocker app.
    2. Log in using your mobile number and OTP.
    3. Go to Issued Documents section.
    4. Find and link your EPFO account using UAN.
    5. You can now download your EPF Passbook and other records.

This is a secure and paperless method of accessing government documents, including your PF account details.

EPF Balance from Your Salary Slip

In some companies, the EPF contribution and balance is shown in the monthly salary slip or employee self-service portal of the company.

Check the “Deductions” or “Employee Benefits” section in your salary slip to see:

    • EPF contribution by employee
    • EPF contribution by employer
    • Total monthly contribution

However, this only gives you the latest month’s contribution and not the total balance. For total amount, use the methods listed above.

Track EPF Contributions Using UAN Login

Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is the key to access all EPFO services. If you haven’t activated your UAN yet, you should do it now.

    ✔️ How to Activate UAN:

    1. Go to https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
    2. Click on “Activate UAN”.
    3. Enter your UAN, Aadhaar, or Member ID.
    4. Fill in your details and get OTP on your mobile.
    5. Create a password and activate the UAN.

Once activated, you can log in anytime and check all your EPF details using this portal.

How to Make Sure You Get Regular EPF Updates

To make sure you never miss an update about your PF account:

    • Link your mobile number and Aadhaar with your UAN.
    • Update your PAN and bank details in the EPFO portal.
    • Download UMANG app and check regularly.
    • Give a missed call once every month to track deposits.

Regular tracking helps avoid errors like:

    • Missed deposits from employer
    • Wrong amounts being credited
    • Inactive accounts due to job change

What Happens If You Change Jobs?

When you switch jobs, your EPF account doesn’t close. It simply gets linked to your UAN, which remains the same.

    Ask your new employer to:

    • Update your UAN in their system.
    • Start contributing to the same EPF account.

You can transfer your old balance to your new account using the EPFO portal.

Never open a new UAN every time you change jobs. Use only one UAN throughout your career.
