The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), which provides health benefits to central government employees, pensioners, and their families, has stopped using its old website. On 28 April 2025, CGHS started a new digital platform called the Health Management Information System (HMIS). This system is expected to improve user experience and make all health-related services more efficient.

The CGHS is key to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s health service delivery. The earlier software system, which had been used since 2005, has now been entirely replaced. Officials said the earlier platform was outdated and could not match today’s digital standards and cybersecurity needs.

Now, a PAN Card is the Main ID for CGHS Users

In the new system, a PAN card is now the primary identification for every CGHS user. This step is expected to solve the issue of duplicate user records. All beneficiaries are advised to link their PAN cards with their CGHS IDs. This step is mandatory for everyone above 18 years of age.

Online Payment is Now Only available on the New Portal

Users can no longer use Bharat Kosh for CGHS payments. All payments, including those for new cards or renewals, must now be made on the new CGHS portal — www.cghs.mohfw.gov.in. This change will reduce errors and avoid unnecessary refunds.

Applications made before 27 April 2025 that were not paid are now considered cancelled. Users will have to apply again using the new website.

    Apply First, Pay Later

CGHS will now check your application first. Payment will be accepted only after successful verification. This process will help avoid the issue of rejected applications and save time for both users and the CGHS staff.

    All Services Now Fully Digital

Card-related services like transferring, adding or removing dependents, and updating pensioner details are now online. There is no need to visit the offices for such changes.

Real-Time Alerts on SMS and Email

All actions taken on the portal — including application status, approvals, and referrals — will be informed through SMS and email. Users will stay updated without repeated follow-ups.

    Reset Password for First Login

Everyone using the portal for the first time must reset their password. This step is important to keep all personal data safe and secure.

    Department Verification via Salary Details

The new system will verify the department of a CGHS applicant using the Drawing & Disbursing Officer (DDO) and Pay & Accounts Office (PAO) codes found in their salary slips. This will speed up the verification process.

    New Mobile App Also Launched

A new CGHS mobile app is now available on Android and iOS. This app offers several services, such as:

    • Digital CGHS card
    • Application tracking
    • Booking doctor appointments
    • Getting e-referrals
    • Direct access to the CGHS Helpdesk
