In a major leadership shift, Bharti Airtel, one of India’s largest telecommunications providers, has announced that Shashwat Sharma will take on the role of Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from January 1, 2026. Current CEO Gopal Vittal will transition to the position of Executive Vice Chairman, taking on broader responsibilities across the Airtel group while continuing his influence over the India market.

This planned succession, announced alongside Airtel’s latest quarterly results, reflects the company’s focus on sustainable leadership and strategic growth. “Gopal will continue to guide our India operations, while stepping into a larger role that aligns with our overall group strategy,” said Airtel in a statement. Vittal has led Airtel for 12 years, navigating challenges and driving growth in a competitive market, and his new role marks a continued commitment to the company’s expansion.

Vittal to Join Airtel Africa’s Board for Strategic Guidance

Adding to his upcoming role, Vittal will also join the Board of Directors at Airtel Africa Plc, providing strategic insights as Airtel’s influence and operations continue to expand internationally. Airtel Africa is a major part of Bharti Airtel’s global portfolio, with operations across 14 African countries.

In this expanded position, Vittal is expected to provide key guidance, leveraging his extensive experience in India’s telecom sector to support Airtel Africa’s growth and innovation initiatives.

Shashwat Sharma, the New Face of Airtel’s Consumer Business

Currently serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO), Shashwat Sharma is no stranger to Airtel’s consumer market dynamics. Sharma will be named CEO-designate to allow for a smooth transition, giving him time to focus on Airtel’s core consumer business and understand the deeper operational aspects that will define his role as CEO. Sharma’s expertise in handling Airtel’s massive consumer base across India positions him well to lead the company’s future plans and market expansions.

    Leadership Shifts Across Airtel’s Management

Airtel’s recent announcement also brought a wave of changes across other leadership roles within the company, underscoring its commitment to a strong management structure.

    • Rajan Bharti Mittal’s Return: Rajan Bharti Mittal has rejoined the Airtel board as the Bharti Board nominee, reinforcing Airtel’s focus on continuity and family involvement in its leadership.
    • Rakesh Bharti Mittal’s New Roles: Rakesh Bharti Mittal, after nine years with Airtel, will now join the boards of Indus Towers Limited and Bharti Hexacom Limited. His long-standing association with the telecom sector strengthens Airtel’s group companies as they focus on scaling up infrastructure and connectivity.
    • Key Marketing Appointments: Amit Tripathi, currently leading marketing and customer experience, will take on a new role as Director (Market Operations), focusing on circle operations and distribution strategy across India. Meanwhile, Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Airtel’s DTH segment, will become Director of Marketing and head Airtel’s Connected Homes division, which includes initiatives in smart home solutions and broadband expansion. In his place, Pushpinder Gujral, who is currently CEO of Airtel’s Upper North Zone, will be appointed CEO and Director of DTH services.

A Strategic Move Toward Sustained Growth and Innovation

This leadership restructuring signals Airtel’s strategy to drive sustained growth and adapt to a rapidly evolving telecom landscape. Chairman Sunil Mittal emphasized the value of Airtel’s carefully planned succession approach, saying, “Airtel has consistently focused on leadership that builds for the long term, and our new appointments come at an ideal time to shape our next phase of growth.”

With these new roles taking effect over the coming months and years, Airtel is gearing up for continued success, aiming to strengthen its services, enhance customer experience, and lead digital innovation both within India and globally.
