Healthcare costs in India can be a burden for many families, with crores of people falling into poverty each year due to expensive treatments. To address this, the government has launched several schemes to provide free healthcare services to those in need. From elderly citizens to accident victims, there are various programs to ensure no one has to worry about money when it comes to their health.

Ayushman Bharat Scheme Expands to Cover Seniors Over 70

Starting from October, the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), will cover all citizens aged 70 and above. This expansion aims to benefit approximately 6 crore senior citizens and 4.5 crore families across the country. Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat offers free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per year, making it the largest government healthcare initiative in the world.

Unfortunately, residents of West Bengal and Delhi are yet to benefit from this scheme as these states have not adopted Ayushman Bharat.

How to Apply for an Ayushman Card

To avail of free healthcare under Ayushman Bharat, eligible individuals need to apply for an Ayushman card. Checking eligibility is simple. Visit the official website of the scheme at https://pmjay.gov.in and click on the “Am I Eligible” option on the homepage. For further assistance, you can also call the helpline number 14555.

Free Healthcare Schemes by the Delhi Government

Delhi residents can also access free treatment through a range of schemes:

    1. Free Treatment in Government Hospitals: All government hospitals in Delhi offer free medical services. If the waiting time for treatment exceeds 30 days, patients are allowed to get treated at a private hospital, with costs covered by the Delhi government. A Delhi voter ID card is required for this benefit.
    2. Accident Victims: Any person injured in a road accident in Delhi can receive treatment at nearby private hospitals, with the expenses paid by the Delhi government.
    3. Delhi Arogya Kosh (DAK): This scheme offers free medical services, including surgeries, implants, and tests, for Delhi residents. Those with a Delhi voter card are eligible for treatment with up to Rs 5 lakh in medical costs covered under this scheme.

Free Healthcare in West Bengal: Swasthya Sathi Scheme

In West Bengal, the Swasthya Sathi scheme ensures that patients admitted to government hospitals receive free medical care. This initiative, led by the Health Department, aims to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on low-income families, providing essential medical services without any cost.

These government schemes are crucial in providing accessible healthcare to millions across India, ensuring that no one is denied treatment due to financial constraints. By taking advantage of these programs, individuals can focus on their health without the worry of overwhelming medical bills.
